A incompatibilidade.

BUDDHISM

Dr. Jeff Wilson

1 – By definition, religion is a promoter of peace. However, over the centuries mankind has found in religions and their differences one of the main reasons for creating war. How can you explain this?

Human conflict is brought about by greed, hatred, and ignorance, which are ultimately rooted in self-attachment and failure to extend genuine compassion to all living beings.  To the extent that any of us have not fully conquered these tendencies, then – whether we are Buddhist, Christian, Atheist or otherwise – we all contribute to pain and suffering in our lives and those of others.  People will grab onto anything that makes them feel safe or powerful – including religion or secularism – and transform it into a weapon against anyone they imagine to be an enemy.  It is only by replacing greed with generosity, hatred with love, and ignorance with wisdom that the roots causes of war, violence, and religious intolerance can be eliminated.

2 – How can it be explained that people kill in the name of God?

Some religions are theistic, which means they are centred on the idea of God. Buddhism is not theistic, so this question can only be answered from outside observation. It appears that people become attached to the idea of God and feel threatened by any other viewpoint, despite the natural incredible diversity of human beings around the world. Worse yet, some religions promote a view that God is petty, jealous, egocentric, violent and close-hearted, with only enough love for those that love God back. With such a small-minded view of God, it is natural that people will sometimes be willing to kill or commit other forms of discrimination against others – after all, if people think God is a bigot, they will be bigots too.

3 – Do you believe, in many circumstances, intolerance comes from extremism? From a Manichaeism point of view of religions – “my God is better than yours”.

Intolerance is something that we are all vulnerable to, whether or not we believe in God. So it might be best to phrase it as “my way is better than yours,” whether our way is religious or not. Buddhists are not theistic but are also not immune to intolerance and religious arrogance. Regardless of our beliefs, we must all be careful to cultivate respectful and compassionate perspectives, so that the troubles caused by self-attachment may lessen and fade away.

4 – What is the way – in your point of view –  to abolish non-peaceful religions? What does humanity have to do so that religion is synonymous with peace and not with war?

Realistically-speaking, the world will never be all Buddhist, or Christian, or Atheist, or anything else.  Diversity will always be with us. Therefore, the answer cannot lie in the ultimate triumph of this or that religion or ideology. In order to promote peace in all nations and sectors of society, we need to increase interreligious and intercultural understanding and acceptance, champion the best parts of each religious tradition and demonstrate that a loving and tolerant way – whether one is this or that religion – is preferable to a dark, self-protective and fearful way of life. This needs to be bolstered by inner work to root out our greed, hatred, and ignorance, and social/political work to create living conditions that reduce suffering and strengthen communities. Only with all of these things operating in a healthy manner can we hope to see less war and conflict in the world.

ISLAMISM

TAHMINA Q.

1 – By definition, religion is a promoter of peace. However, over the centuries mankind has found in religions and their differences one of the main reasons for creating war. How can you explain this?

The overall purpose of religion is a form of guidance. A way of living with morals and values and the idea of something bigger than us, to help guide us through this journey called “life”. Looking past the differences within each religion, the end goal is to live a life of good acts and pure intent. What unfortunately happens along the way is: we get so caught up in the minor details of our religious stories – Which prophet did what? Who exactly was Jesus to God? Etc. Which then encourages war over whose story is essentially right within their own religion, completely deferring from the fact that the point is to live in peace, love and unity.

2 – How can it be explained that people kill in the name of God?

In my personal opinion, I believe these books of God – Qu’ran, Bible etc. have been taken out of context and treated as literal forms of instructions, by extremists. Often times, when people are in a dark place in their lives and look for a way out and back into the ‘light’ / good place. Many lean on religion to refocus and to live righteously, fixing the ‘bad’ in their lives by devoting and completing indulging themselves into the revelations of God. People who can justify killing in the name of God, have taken the words of our religious books and have misunderstood the lessons of it, and have used it as literal instructions on how to serve. So, when topics such as sacrifice are addressed, the lessons are discredited and are horrifically misinterpreted as God requesting someone to take another’s life for ‘the greater good’. I believe it is so important to remember that these books of revelations were written centuries ago. Although some of the lessons and ideologies can be relevant and applied to our lives today, the words and language may be outdated and can be perceived differently by the world today.

3 – Do you believe, in many circumstances, intolerance comes from extremism? From a Manichaeism point of view of religions – “my God is better than yours”.

We are definitely socially constructed to think we are different within our own religions, which generates a sense of entitlement and a thought process of “my God is better than yours”. As a modern Muslim, I have had my fair share of conversations with other Muslims who believe that our religion is the ‘right’ and only religion to stand by – which defeats the entire purpose of religion itself! We should all be happy and content that others are mutually living within a purpose – no matter what religion we are in or what name we have titled God. Extremists who have reformed religion and have created a sense of ownership around God, as a way to control and restrict access within their religion to the ‘outsiders’ – to me, doesn’t align with what religion is meant to do. My God is not better than yours, for God is everyone’s God.

4 – What is the way – in your point of view –  to abolish non-peaceful religions? What does humanity have to do so that religion is synonymous with peace and not with war?

In my opinion, the way to abolish non-peaceful religions is to utilize media outlets and create a conversation around religion in a positive light and with a new approach. In our world today, the only time you hear about religion is when two countries are at war about religious differences. If we were to use media time to educate the world on different religions without solely highlighting the extremists – we would quickly come to the conclusion that we are all the same. Whenever I hear about Muslims on the news, it’s always aligned with terrorist acts and specifically the Pakistani / middle eastern people. When in fact, there is a large scope of Muslims that do not look like the typical brown-colored person. There are black, asians and whites that are Muslims as well, living a successful and peaceful life. Highlighting more Muslims that are world leaders and CEO’s and making a great difference in the world, it invites more kindness into people’s hearts and minds. Humanity as a whole needs to shift its perspective on religion and its people, by shining a positive light and dramatically abolishing stereotypical thinking to help us understand we are all the same. Deconstructing old ways of thinking and reconstructing new and open ideologies that work for the new world.

CATHOLICISM

Pe.

Do mundo?”.

JUDAISM

Rabbi Adam Cutler

Practicing a religion is always an interpretive act. We inherit the sacred teachings of those who came before us and are charged with applying them to new situations. There is always a human element in religious interpretation. Those who want to find justification for violence will always be able to do so, whether that justification is found in religious texts or other ideologies. Opting for violence is always a choice. It is incumbent upon religious leaders to understand the choices in front of them and to opt for ones that promote peace over war. I believe such an approach is consistent with the overarching themes of peace and love for all of God’s creations that are at the core of Judaism.

I think every person, whether religious or not, can do a better job at understanding others who are not like them. We must be vigilant to speak up against hate speech. The etiology of hatred however is not religion, though religion plays into it. Hatred is sociological.
