Winter storm headed for Toronto on Tuesday

You may want to get any errands out of the way on Monday — travelling is going to be a lot more difficult in 24 hours.

Environment Canada is warning that a winter storm is headed for Ontario, set to hit on Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday.

The storm will bring between 15 and 20 cm of snow, as well as ice pellets and possible freezing rain.

That’s not quite as much as the storm two weeks ago, which brought 33 cm of snow to Toronto and caused school closures and transit snarls.

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health also issued an extreme cold weather alert on Monday, which is in effect until further notice.

Monday’s high is – 2 C, -13 with wind chill. Overnight, temperatures will drop to -9 C, -19 with wind chill.

The cold weather alert triggers extra services that focus on getting vulnerable Torontonians indoors.

Weather begins early Tuesday

Here’s how Tuesday could play out: snow will begin early in the morning, changing into ice pellets later in the day. Strong winds will reduce visibility during this time.

Snow will continue into Wednesday before tapering off into flurries on Wednesday evening.

It may be wise to plan ahead for transportation, because, as Environment Canada sagely cautions: “travel is likely to be affected.”

Meanwhile, city streets remain icy Monday, with city crews salting streets and trails overnight to help the morning commute run smoothly.
