Man dead after shooting in Toronto’s west end, police hunting for gunman

A man is dead after being shot in the city’s west end and investigators are now hunting for a suspect believed to have fled the scene in a white vehicle, Toronto police say.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Dufferin Street and Glencairn Avenue at 6:40 p.m. for reports of gunfire.

Police arrived to find the man in critical condition. He died in hospital shortly afterward.

The homicide unit has now taken over the investigation.

Det.-Sgt. Andy Singh told reporters the suspect is believed to have been dressed in black, possibly wearing a mask, and last seen fleeing in a white-coloured SUV fleeing northbound on Dufferin Street.

While police at first said the gunfire reportedly came from a moving vehicle, Singh said Monday night that the shooter is believed to have gotten out of a stopped vehicle, opening fire on foot.

“Right now, there is a shooter out there,” he said when asked if there is any concern for public safety.

Police are still working to notify next of kin and are not yet releasing information on the victim.

Investigators are canvassing for video and are asking anyone with information to contact them at 416-808-1300 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
