Male pedestrian, 90, dead after being struck in McDonald’s parking lot

A 90-year-old male pedestrian has died after being struck in a McDonald’s parking lot in the city’s north end.

Emergency responders were called to the Steeles Avenue West and Bathurst Street area shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday for reports a man had been struck by a vehicle.

Police say a 47-year-old driver was exiting the drive-thru when they took a right hand turn into the parking lot, where the elderly man was walking.

“For some unknown reason, the pickup truck struck that pedestrian, knocking him to the ground,” said Sgt. Alex Crews, who described it as a “low speed collision.”

The driver remained at the scene and administered first aid to the victim, police said.

He suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, said Crews.

Investigators with the Toronto police traffic services division were called in to investigate.

“We have some good video, we have some witnesses,” said Crews, who declined to speculate about whether the driver may have been distracted. “Right now it’s still young and fresh in the investigation.”
