Police release images of suspect vehicle in Scarborough shooting that injured two girls

Toronto police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a vehicle that may be connected to the Scarborough shooting. Thursday that left two young girls injured.

Emergency services were called to the scene near McCowan Rd. and Alton Towers Circle, near McNicoll Ave., after a shooter opened fire at another man in a small park at 5:01 p.m., police said.

There were 11 children in the park when the shooting happened, police said. Two girls, ages 5 and 9, were seriously injured. Paramedics said the younger child was shot in the abdomen and the older girl was shot in the ankle.

Both victims were rushed to Sick Kids hospital and underwent surgeries. Police said both girls are in stable condition. Their injuries aren’t life-threatening.

One man, who was also at the park at the time of shooting, may have been the intended target, police said.

On Friday morning, investigators released a photo of a car that may be connected to the shooting. The vehicle is described as a black, four-door, 2007-2011 Nissan Versa sedan.

Police are looking for two suspects who were in a car at the time — one driver and one male shooter who approached the park by foot and then escaped with the driver.

Speaking to reporters Thursday, police Chief Mark Saunders said the suspects were “cowards” for shooting in a children’s playground.

“This act is despicable, and rest assured that we’ll put adequate resources to resolve this one,” Saunders said.

Mayor John Tory said in a statement that the shooting was “a totally unacceptable act of gun violence.”
