Social Responsibility – Is it a myth?

These days of Covid-19, the words social responsibility are  heard more and more.

In a perfect world, social responsibility refers to an ethical framework and suggests that an entity, be it an organization or individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large thus the words mean substance of a balance between the two words. The meaning places a very high demand on society to help your fellow men. Isn’t that what Jesus preached? As I digest the news from celebrations of the 4th of July in the United States and in particular from Chicago where 14 people were shot, with 14 dead including five small children, I wonder where social responsibility begins and ends. This tragedy, particularly as it relates to the killing of children, diminishes social obligations, which each of us should embrace, substituting it with rage and contempt for people who have lowered the level of humanity to that of animalistic savagery and reduces a living environment to that of a jungle. How has humanity lowered itself to this level? Where are the voices of Black Lives Matter and others when they see blacks killing blacks in this manner without any consideration for life?

Where is a social conscience that says that the world is still a place of peace and respect? Surely, we are all developing doubts about how the world turns and how the “Leaders” of this earth govern. Shame on a society that has lowered itself to a level where even children cannot be protected. At a micro level there are people and organizations that need to continue to survive in order to protect the unprotected and underprivileged.

As the middle class disappears, the haves and have nots become more pronounced. The streets of Vancouver east side are strewn with overdosed bodies, which can’t be helped. Mental health issues are exploding and familial abuse rampant. Is this a Covid issue or an underlying rot which has been fermenting for a long time and has finally surfaced? Where will the help come from? Help must come from grassroots organizations that work daily with the mentally challenged, the incapacitated or the poor. Society must support organizations such as Abrigo, Luso Canadian Charitable Foundation, Famous People Players and others, particularly in times of crisis such as we are now facing. They help people who often can’t help themselves and this is really what social responsibility is about.

Someone asked if being a billionaire should be illegal. Right or wrong, the question of how much is needed or desired would be a discussion to be had at another time. The reality is that regardless of how much money is out there, not enough is reaching the people who need it most. Let’s empower ourselves and bolster someone’s spirit by leveraging fortune, whatever it may be, and investing in a society where lack of morality and respect is travelling fast on the way to hell. Giving back to the needy, sustenance of underprivileged, respecting the rule of law and creating a culture based on ethics and respect for the individual will flatten the curb and thus prevent society from total moral degradation. Don’t close your mind and open your capacity to think and change, for the sake of the children.
