O “Vigário de Cristo”

Editorial

The “Vicar of Christ”

As Easter 2021 approaches, an important date in the Christian calendar is celebrated. On April 4th Catholics around the world celebrate the resurrection of Christ which promotes the belief that God raised Jesus from the dead after his crucifixion as first born thus starting his exalted life as Christ and Lord, appearing to his disciples for 40 days where after he ascended to heaven. This is important to understand because it shows that Jesus defeated death and gives proof of life after death.

The power that raised Jesus from the dead provides believers with the guiding principles that the same power sets the believer free to live a new life that destroys sin in our lives thus our victory over sin. Sin appears to be a predominant word in our lives and we live an entire lifetime trying to rid ourselves of it.  Paul wrote about resurrection;” Affirmation that our present perishable bodies will be endowed through the power of Jesus resurrection, with imperishable life”. Therefore if we live within the tenets of the church our spirits will live forever. Life as Catholics envision one main goal which is to go to heaven because it’s a place of peace, love, community and worship where god is surrounded by a heavenly court and other heavenly beings. This description should be adopted for earth instead of heaven. Catholics on earth are led by the “Vicar of Christ” Pope Francis who leads 1.9 billion Christians many of whom are living in sin due to lack of participation in the daily requirements of the Church. So how can God ever forgive millions of non practicing Catholics who have adopted views inconsistent with their church? Many figure that they may just as well go to hell which is a place regarded in various religions as a spiritual realm of evil where suffering is often depicted as a place of perpetual fire beneath the earth where the wicked are punished after death. If it’s beneath the earth then earth must be flat and if it’s only for the wicked most of us will end up there. The celebration of Easter is once again being adjusted to comply with Covid but it does not provide a respite to our “Vicar of Christ” who must be wondering what else can go wrong with his Church. Covid has caused Vatican revenues to drop globally due to lack of attendance at churches and the Vatican itself, creating a financial nightmare. The pope’s latest financial statements predicts a deficit of 60M euros and cardinals are expected to have their salaries cut by ten per cent. This cut must be heaven shattering since these servants of God live in the most luxurious apartments in Rome fully financed by the Vatican. Where is the humble Christian lifestyle promoted by St. Joseph? What in hell is going on? Isn’t the church being financed with pennies from heaven and why is there a shortfall? Surely not due to mismanagement.

Pope Francis has been known for his humility but it’s obvious that his governance skills need improvement. He has been more a political leader than a religious leader but the politics of the church have not changed much under his leadership as it relates to abortion, clerical celibacy and ordination of women. His inaction on major issues will ensure that Catholics will not physically participate in the tenets of the church and will be Catholics from afar. Governance needs to adjust to current times to prevent further erosion of the foundation of the Catholic Church. Recently, “The congregation for the Doctrine of Faith”, gave an answer to a question regarding same-sex unions. The response was,” God cannot bless sin and the church cannot bless same sex unions”. The church continues to skate around this and other issues but continues to profess inclusiveness, blessings and forgiveness for our sins through confession. Perhaps cleansing their own house first from the perversion of thousands of priests who sexually abused and used children would be a good place to start instead of continuing to sweep the issue under the rug. A special jubilee year was announced to begin Dec. 8th, 2021 which will focus on forgiveness and mercy. Hopefully this will be for all and not just for those the church determines should go to heaven.  The Vatican is being challenged by the same issues many countries face. Countries generally adapt to challenges and work with their citizens to achieve change which benefit all. Will the City/State of the Vatican do this? Perhaps not in my lifetime so I guess I will end up under the flat earth which for the church’s sake wont turn upside down.

Happy Easter everyone.
