Mulheres – a outra metade do céu

Editorial

– As mulheres reformam-se com uma riqueza 30% inferior à dos homens;

As mulheres têm várias falhas.

Women-the other half of the sky

March 8th-2021 is International Women’s Day. This year’s theme is “choose to challenge” and “women in leadership: achieving an equal future in a covid-19 world”.

In 1977 the United Nations recognized the day and declared March 8th as International Women’s Day across the globe. It is a day to spread awareness among people regarding women’s rights and equality. This day celebrates the cultural, social and political achievements of women.

As I wrote the previous two paragraphs many questions come to mind. Since the declaration in 1977 and for the next 44 years, women continue to declare that the world still remains a challenge to achieve fairness and equality. That’s a long and protracted war to achieve change. Why? What are the obstacles preventing women from achieving what they are looking for? Perhaps a change in a society that favours men to the detriment of women? Maybe gender equality is not an achievable goal because of the strategies currently being implemented to open the ultimate path being sought. Placing the emphasis on abstract assumptions that men are the cause for the failure of women to achieve will not bring about the changes women are looking for. What is gender equality anyway? Women are who they are and the assumption is that with some exceptions they do not want to be like men.

An important aspect of the International Women’s Day is to celebrate women’s achievements. Do women really want to celebrate their accomplishments at the risk of being compared to men? Surely accomplishments are personal triumphs for intimate consumption towards a plan to do better. The hurdles that women have to overcome in their personal and professional lives will always exceed those of a man. While some may interpret this as being all encompassing, the fact is that a women’s achievements cannot be measured against any tangible feat by any male counterpart because of the varied tasks females are expected to perform. Justice and dignity are feats worth fighting for but gender equality will require special skills where the genetics of male minds will have to be reprogrammed to view the world from a female perspective.

The celebration of March 8th will be filled with flowery narratives including celebration, visibility, equality, strategic collaboration, trust and appreciation, awareness and positive thinking. However, all the positive aspects being celebrated have to be counterbalanced to include many women without a voice who are suffering the burdens of society because there is no one to help them.

Some challenges women face today are similar to 1977.

• women retire with 30 per cent less wealth than men

• women are 25 per cent less likely than men to reach executive positions in corporate boardrooms

• females earn less than men for similar type of work in executive positions

• women are marginalized and sexualized because of appearances regardless of any positive messaging society may trumpet.

These are only a few of the challenges faced by women in a modern society where appearances rather than performance dictate success. Recently watched a television show produced by women where females are portrayed fighting for position, betraying each other, jealousy and promiscuity shown by the main characters revealing stereotypical assumptions long held by many that women do not like or support each other. Pornography is one of the most lucrative industries in the world today. The number of eyes looking at mostly women and consuming aspects of deprived sexuality cannot be helpful to women’s causes.

Let’s celebrate but only the fact that respect and inclusion are necessary to bring harmony to the world. Forced gender equality will not work. Nurturing and embracing change is a slow process but it can be done and it starts by many in society not looking at a woman as a sex object when she walks by. Sounds simple eh?

Women’s faults are many. Men only have two and they are everything they do and everything they say.

Women don’t need a day, they need a lifetime of our respect.

The stars in the sky are yours.
