Drake makes music history by reaching 50 billion streams
Canadian hip-hop superstar Drake has just shattered another music industry record, this week becoming the first artist to reach 50 billion streams across all platforms.
The 31-year-old’s latest album Scorpion had already broken several records — among them the first album to be streamed one billion times globally, with 89.9 million streams of the album happening in a single day on Apple Music.
The album has also been sitting at the number 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart for the past five weeks. His single In My Feelings, which inspired the Kiki Challenge dance craze, has also topped the R&B and hip-hop songs chart for four weeks.
The video for the album’s lead single, God’s Plan, which saw Drake giving away nearly a million dollars to individuals and institutions, also generated huge buzz. Drake called it “the most important thing I have ever done in my career.”
The album also gave Drake the record for most number 1 hits among rappers, surpassing Kanye West, Missy Elliott, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Eminem.
