Several Algarve councils on maximum fire alert

Five Algarve areas are on maximum fire alert today, while six others are on the second highest level of alert.

According to the Portuguese Met Office, Loulé, São Brás de Alportel, Tavira, Alcoutim and Castro Marim are all facing the highest possible risk of fires, while fire-fighters in Monchique, Silves, Portimão, Lagos, Vila do Bispo and Aljezur have been placed on a very high level of alert.

These advisories are issued based on prevailing weather conditions, which include air temperature, wind speed and a lack of rainfall.
