The Political Landscape….Federal/Provincial/Municipal

Vincent Black

The political landscape in Canada has a bright future with wonderful opportunities for our community…we should embrace the political process as opposed to staying away and not getting involved.
If you are thinking about running for any political office or getting involved don’t hesitate to jump in. Speak to someone that has some type of experience or connect with someone who participated in an electoral process.
We have a nice base to draw from with our representatives at Queen’s Park with the likes of the Hon. Charles Sousa, Minister of Finance to Cristina Martins who is an MPP. Councillor Ana Bailão at City Hall or Mário Silva a former MP that represented the west end of Toronto or Peter Fonseca representing London North Centre. Their offices are all willing and able to assist anyone that wants to get involved and participate or run as a candidate.
Very often we as a community tend not to support each other and we either support someone else not from the Portuguese community or do not participate at all, which is a shame in itself.
We should take a lesson from other communities and support and encourage our own to keep moving forward and strive to make a mark and contribute in ways that set examples for our future youth to get inspired and motivated.
Running for political office or getting involved in the process is a rewarding experience, you should embrace it and feel good about getting involved. Making a difference is very rewarding.
Running for office is important, and you don’t really need more than to be right on the issues, and to be able to articulate what it is you believe. You don’t need a certain background.
You don’t need to be a lawyer. You don’t need to have some professional degree. Just a willingness and a desire to get involved in the political process in your community. John G. Diefenbaker, introducing the Canadian Bill of Rights in 1960. “I am a Canadian, free to speak without fear, free to worship in my own way, free to stand for what l think right, free to oppose what l believe wrong, free to choose those who shall govern my country. This heritage of freedom l pledge to uphold for myself and all people kind.”
These words should be inspiring to all Canadians, especially those of Portuguese Canadian background to know that you have the backing of a great county and all that it represents.
We live in a country that protects our rights and privileges and our opportunities as a community are bountiful.
Get involved, you will love it.
