The Portuguese-Canadian community

The Portuguese-Canadian community is slowly evolving but not always for the better. The community continues to point to a number of community leaders, who are for the most part dinosaurs from time past and who refuse to admit that society is changing. Portuguese-Canadians have for the most part refused to accept integration into Canadian society to the detriment of the next generation.
Politically we remain under-represented or poorly represented where the priority is never to promote Portuguese-Canadian culture, even if only in the periphery, but for only self- preservation.
We applaud events that have no significance for the community that has been trying to build itself since 1953. We are people who refuse to applaud successes in the community.
Recently Gente da Nossa TV and Nellie Pedro celebrated its 30th anniversary of continuous programing to the Portuguese Canadian community and more.
This is an event that should be applauded and reported on but the shameless media in the Portuguese community refused to acknowledge and give its deserved plaudits. It is again another example of the self-serving type of media that caters only to financial interests, cowardly editorials and useless filler within its pages and screens without any regards for things that can move a community forward.
This is only but one example of many that could be outlined. Its time to grow-up and report on what’s important instead of falling all over ourselves to report on useless political and traditional events that do nothing but fill the stomachs of the gluttons that are always looking for a freebie.
Development of a community takes guts and sacrifice and by diminishing those who are trying to build will take us nowhere.
