Cellphone sparks fire on Air Canada flight

A passenger on board an Air Canada flight at Pearson airport was burned by her cellphone which caused a fire Thursday.

Around 7 a.m. on flight AC10, a passenger’s phone “began to burn” causing a fire which was then extinguished by emergency crews, said Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick.

The aircraft was near the gate, preparing to depart for Vancouver when the fire occurred.

The female passenger was treated by Pearson’s emergency services, said Greater Toronto Airports Authority spokesperson Robin Smith.

She was able to walk off the plane, but the severity of her injuries is unknown.

Fitzpatrick said there was no damage to the aircraft, which was a Boeing 787-9 with 266 customers onboard. The flight was delayed almost two hours.

The model of the phone and the cause of the fire is unknown.
