Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve will undergo $48-million upgrade

MONTREAL — The Societe du parc Jean-Drapeau (SPJD) has unveiled its final concept plan for the renovation and expansion of Montreal’s Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve paddocks, used for motor racing.

The $48-million project will include construction of a new three-storey multi-purpose building, a Dec. 14 media statement said.
The circuit hosts the annual Canadian Grand Prix, considered as the largest tourist event in the country, but current infrastructure has become inadequate as needs for the Formula One teams in such areas as the garages, control tower and media areas have grown, the statement noted. The current paddocks were built in 1988.
The project will enable the SPJD to meet standards required by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile and the Formula One World Championship.
The build will consolidate all services into one building, which is designed to be adaptable for other events, the statement said.
The new paddocks will be set up with F1 team garages, control tower and offices for staff on the first floor, lodging, control tower, podium and media areas on the second floor and lodging and terrace on the third. The building will also be equipped with a freight elevator that will be used to bring cars or heavy furniture to each of the levels of the building and it will have a glassed-in elevator for the clientele.
The lodging capacity will increase from 1,800 to 5,000 with the build.
The City of Montreal is contributing $30 million to the project and $18 million has been allocated by the Quebec Ministry of Municipal Affairs.
The SPJD has issued a public call for tender to find a contractor for the project. Construction will begin immediately after the 2018 Grand Prix is over, and the project is targeted to be completed in April 2019.
